More Antique Quilt Tops

As promised, here are some more of my eBay purchases from a few years ago. This Improved Nine Patch is in lovely soft colors. I think it will look lovely hand-quilted, don't you? Here's the entire top. It's double-bed sized now. I'm thinking I might add a couple of borders to bring it up to at least queen-size, but I'm worried about finding something that will have the right look. Not to worry, by the time I've actually learned to hand-quilt who knows WHAT wonderful fabrics will be available!
This old top looks nicer in person than in the photo. I like the simple geometric shapes and the old fabrics are lovely and crisp.
And I've always been a sucker for Shoo-Fly, so how could I resist this old one? Again, it's wrinkled because I'm afraid to iron it until I'm ready to work on it. The fabric is in good shape but it is very old.
So, do you think I have enough old quilt tops to keep me busy learning to hand-quilt...hah! Wretched Excess is my middle name...

Only four days left till I go up to Sydney to get my new sewing machine...can't wait! Hope I can still remember how to piece quilt blocks...

Yesterday's visit to the cats at the quarantine place was really disgusting...41 degrees C. on the drive home. That's 105.8 F., for those in the U.S. Really horrible, but fortunately we'd left the little room air conditioner going in the living room, so the house was pleasant when we got home. Felt SO sorry for the furry felines, though...they just lay around looking long-suffering in this kind of heat. Two weeks from today we can go collect them and bring them home, at long last. REALLY looking forward to that!

I have some old tops I bought on ebay too that I've thought about hand quilting - it just takes so long and there are so many other things that compete for my time right now - esp. my knitting.

Those quilts are treasures. And they will look very good with handquilting. Agree that the shoofly is beautiful.
I feel so sorry for your cats, but soon they are home with you. A sort of christmasgift to get them home.

Are you SURE you want to learn hand quilting on big quilts? LOL

I found wrangling a large cot quilt challenging enough. When you've got it all worked out do let me know!

Sorry to hear your cats are having a bit of a hard time adjusting. They'll be a lot happier in two weeks time and so will you. What a great Christmas present for all of you!

Sorry the babies are suffering in the heat, but I'm glad to hear they'll be coming home soon. Love the quilt tops esp that 4-Patch with what looks like bright pink sashing. Beatiful. Congrats on the new sewing machine.

Stop Me Before I Quilt Again!

What is this big pile of fabric and scraps, you may ask: Some you may recognize from the 10 Wishes quilt, but others are new. Yes, I've made a start on the Big Girl Quilt (i.e. queen-size) for Katie Rose. I've been so inspired by the lovely quilts Mary and her Heartstrings group have made that I decided to make one for Katie. Here's where I am -- two rows of string blocks made...four rows still unmade. I will sash these blocks with 2" sashing (don't know what fabric yet), making stars from the cornerstones (ditto). You can't really see the EQ design very well, I know...sorry. Here's a close-up of the first four blocks: Second four: Third four: It's really fun doing these. Sunday, Sunday...

Well, I'm going to try Tonya's suggestion and load my photos in the center instead of to the left, and see if that helps any with the spacing problems I'm having. So let's try putting up Dad's River Dreams Quilt that disappeared yesterday: Well, that seems to have worked...I think. So, let's add a couple of kids' quilts I've made over the years. Here's an I Spy for my grandkids. Can you see that I added their names, as a crossword puzzle, among the I Spy squares? Well, by gum! That seems to have worked, too...thanks, Tonya! Shall we go for a trifecta here? How about a little bluework quilt I did for my nephew. I found on-line coloring book images, printed them out and traced them on white fabric, then embroidered them in blue, setting them in stars afterward. A Sad Farewell to the Best Old Friend

And so the time has come to say farewell to our little friend, Alfonse le Soot. He would have been 13 years old right about now. Those of you who have been reading this blog for awhile may remember his dramatic disappearance in July of 2008. And his equally dramatic return just over a month later. No explanation was ever found for his disappearance, but we were so happy to have him home. In late March of this year we made a trip to California, only to have the terrible news from our wonderful house-sitter, Judy, that Alfonse had collapsed and had to be rushed to the vet the day after we left. The vet tried mightily to save our little fellow, but he had experienced sudden heart failure resulting in a clot that paralyzed his hind legs. After three heart-rending days and a steadily worsening condition, the decision had to be made to let him go. We returned to Australia two days ago and today, with heavy hearts, we picked up Alfonse’s ashes, brought him home and buried him in his final res
